Both my wife and I were raised in Denver City, TX, a small town 80 miles southwest of Lubbock. I went to college at what is now called West Texas A&M in Canyon, TX. While in college my wife, Lagatha, and I married and started a family. I received my degree in Agricultural Business in 1976. After graduation, I returned to Denver City and worked in the oil industry, however, my interests have always leaned towards agriculture. I always wanted to start my own business, but being young and with no money or financial backing, I had to find a field where I could enter with very little capital.
I accidently stumbled into the remodeling field by helping a friend roof houses after a bad hail storm in our area. This was my start in the home improvement business. Before I knew what was happening, people were asking me to install siding on their homes. This in turned lead me to work for the first siding company based in Lubbock. I was in charge of selling siding jobs while my wife learned all the ins and outs of the office and how to run a business.
In 1983, we finally decided the only way to be in complete control of our business was to own the business, so we formed West Texas Exteriors, and now the rest is history. We started as a mom and pop business and I really began to learn how to operate a business, within 5 years grew to having 5 offices and 150 employees. After a few years of running this size of a company and all the problems associated with it, we decided “big” was not always better. So we downsized to a family business again, with my entire family being involved.
My son, Tanner, does estimates and supervises jobs. My wife still runs the office and the takes care of the bookkeeping. I still sell jobs and oversee installations, work on marketing plans as well as everything else. It is a great feeling knowing that my family is involved in my work and can enjoy it as much as I can. In our busiest time of the year we will have 7 trained crews installing windows, seamless siding and metal roofs.
We encourage people to do a lot of research before hiring a contractor. I believe when you do this, you will certainly put West Texas Exteriors at the top of your list, we are the best you can find in this area- and know that our morals and strong work ethic raises us far above the other contractors.
